Arthur EASTO (1890 - 1917)

Arthur was born in Thrandeston in 1890 to Charles Watson and Shelomoth Drusilla EASTO. Arthur was one of 14 children, 3 of whom died in infancy.

Arthur’s father was the Innkeeper of the Queens Head Inn, on Little Green which is where the family were living at the time of his birth. In 1891 Arthur was 7 months old and living with his parents and siblings. He was still living there in 1901 age 10 he with his parents and siblings. In 1911 he was living at the Swan Inn, Stuston with his brother in law Alfred Runacres, sister Florence and their 3 children and his brother George. He was working as a Tailor.

Arthur married Gertrude WOODROW in 1915 and their son Lawrence George EASTO was born in 1916.

It is not known when Arthur enlisted, but it is known that he was a Private in the Duke of Cambridge’s Own (Middlesex) Regiment and that he enlisted at Bury St. Edmunds.

Arthur died of pneumonia, in the 7th Canadian General Hospital in Etaples, France following wounds he received in battle on 03 December 1917 at the age of 27. He is buried at the Etaples Military Cemetery, in the Pas de Calais in France. He has a listing on the Commonwealth War Graves site and was awarded the British and Victory medals.

There are memorials in the Diss Express on 06 December 1918 commemorating his death. They are from Arthur’s wife and son, his parents and his siblings.

There is an Arthur EASTO mentioned in the Diss Express on 26 April 1918. The article is from the annual report of the Ancient Order of Foresters regarding members who had died while serving their country. Arthur EASTO is mentioned in this article as one of their members who had died.

Arthur’s brother Walter fought in the first world war with the 3rd Norfolk regiment and his brother George with the Canadian Oversea Expeditionary Force. They both survived the war.

Arthur’s son Lawrence died on 06 March 1945, age 28, while serving as a Private in the Welsh Regiment. He is buried in the Commonwealth War Graves section of Aberystwyth Cemetery.
