Herbert ABBOTT (1894 - 1918)

Herbert was born in 1894 in Thrandeston to Edward and Rosa ABBOTT. He was the second child and had a sister Rosa who was, born in 1892.

In 1901 Herbert, age 6 lived at Mellis Road, Thrandeston, with his parents and sister Rosa. His grandfather Charles HAROLD an Agricultural Labourer was head of the house and was a widower.

In 1911 Herbert age 16 was living at Mellis Road, with his father Edward a Railway Labourer, his mother Rosa, and his grandfather Charles HAROLD. He was working as a Farm Labourer.

Herbert’s medal card states that the first theatre of war he served in was the Balkans which he entered on 30 July 1915. He was serving with the Suffolk Regiment when he died on 22 February 1918, age 24 at Gallipoli. He has a listing on the Commonwealth War Graves Memorial site and was awarded the 1915 Star, The British Medal and the Victory Medal. He is buried in the Alexandria War Memorial Cemetery in Egypt.
