Ernest Edward STEVENS (1890 - 1916)
Ernest was born in 1890 in Brandeston to George and Harriet STEVENS. He was 1 of 6 children. 2 of Ernest’s brothers, Arthur and Charles were also killed in the war.
In 1901 Ernest living at Rook Hall Cottages with his parents and siblings. His father was a Horseman on a farm.
In 1908, when he was 18 years of age, Ernest’s mother Harriet died.
In 1911, Ernest was 21 and was living at the Pot Ash, Pot Ash Lane, Eye with his father and siblings. He was an Under Horseman on a Farm.
It is not known when Ernest enlisted, but it is known that he was a Private with the West Yorkshire Regiment. He died on 01 July 1916 at the age of 25. Ernest has a listing on the Commonwealth War Graves site, was awarded the 1915 Star, Victory and British medals. He is commemorated at the Gordon Dump Cemetery in Ovillers La Boiselle in France.
