Arthur James STEVENS (1888 - 1917)

Arthur was born in 1888 to George and Harriet STEVENS in Shimpling, Norfolk. He was 1 of 6 children and 2 of his brothers, Ernest and Charles also died in the great war.

In 1891, age 13, Arthur was living with his parents and a sibling at Hoo Road, Kettleburgh, Suffolk. His father was an agricultural labourer. In 1901 he was living with his parents and siblings at Rook Hall Cottages in Eye. His father was a horseman on a farm.

In 1908, when he was 20 years old, Harriet, Arthur’s mother died.

In 1910, Arthur married Edith KNOTT in the Hartismere registration district.

It is not known when Arthur enlisted but in 1911 he was a driver in the Royal Field Artillery, 134th Battery at the Louisberg Barracks in Bordon, Hampshire.

Arthur died on 26 December 1917 at the age of 29. He has a listing on the Commonwealth War Graves site and was awarded the 1914 Star, Victory and British medals. He is buried at the Tincourt New British cemetery in France.
