Winfarthing picture

WINFARTHING is a parish and village, distant 4 miles N. of Diss, in Diss Hundred and county court district, diocese of Norwich, archdeaconary of Norfolk, rural deanery of Redenhall, and Guiltcross union. The church, Virgin Mary, is an ancient edifice, with a fine square tower containing a peal of five bells; In the interior is a fine Norman font. The living is a rectory, in the gift of the Earl of Albemarl; the Rev. Ellice Keppel, M.A., is the rector. The tithes were coommuted in 1840, for £570 per annum; here are 30 acres of glebe. On the lodge farm may be seen two oak trees of extraordinary dimensions, and very great age. Here are chapels for the Wesleyans and Primitive Methodist; also a school in connection with the Church. ..... [J. G. Harrod & Co.‘s Royal County Directory of Norfolk with Lowestoft in Suffolk, 1877.]
