FERSFIELD is a village and parish, 5 miles west-north-west from Diss railway station, and 99 from London, in the South-Eastern division of the county, Diss hundred and county court district, Guiltcross union, rural deanery of Redenhall, arch deaconry of Norfolk, and diocese of Norwich. The church of St. Andrew was rebuilt by Sir Robert and William Du Blois: it is an old building, with a flint tower: the interior has undergone much improvement, and contains marble monuments of Sir Robert and William Du Blois; also a marble slab inscribed to the memory of the Rev. F. Blomefield, who was rector here for 23 years. The register dates from the year 1531. The living is a rectory, yearly value £400, in the gift of C. S. M. Kyrle, Esq., and held by the Rev. George W. Darby, M.A., of' St. John’s College, Cambridge. This place gave birth to the Rev. Francis Blomefield, who was the projector and writer of the History of Norfolk, published in the 17th century, and afterwards reprinted by Mr. William Miller, of London, in eleven large volumes. The Duke of Norfolk is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is heavy; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area is 1,386 acres, and the population in 1861 was 295.
