Charles SHELDRAKE (1834-c. 1861)

 

Charles SHELDRAKE, son of John SHELDRAKE (c. 1796- ) and Elizabeth GLADWELL (c. 1796- ), was born on 17 Feb 1834 in Burston, Norfolk.1 He was baptised on 16 Mar 1834 in Burston.1 He appeared in the census in 1841 in Burston - 7, living with parents John (45, thatcher) and Elizabeth (45), and siblings Elizabeth (20), James (15, agricultural labourer), Solomon (14, agricultural labourer), Perry (10), Eleanor (6) and Henry (4).2 He appeared in the census in 1851 in Burston - 17, agricultural labourer, living with parents John (61, thatcher) and Elizabeth (58), siblings Henry (13) and Emily (9), and visitors Elizabeth SHELDRAKE (36) and Eleanor SHELDRAKE (16).3 On 12 Apr 1852 he appeared in court. He appeared at the General Quarter Sessions held at King's Lynn, convicted of larceny, and sentenced to 6 weeks imprisonment.

On 15 Apr 1853 Charles appeared in court. He was committed at Diss for larceny, stealing 6 plough shares and 2 guns.

On 29 Jun 1853 Charles appeared in court in Norwich, Norfolk. He appeared at the General Quarter Sessions held at the Castle, convicted of larceny (with a previously noted conviction for felony), and sentenced to 10 years transportation.

On 18 Aug 1853 he was admitted to Millbank Prison - no. 25542, age on conviction 17, single, could neither read nor write, a labourer, convicted 29 Jun 1853 at Norwich Sessions for larceny and previous conviction of felony, sentence of 10 years transportation. On 15 Dec 1854 he was admitted to Millbank Prison - no. 2211, age on conviction 17, single, could neither read nor write, a labourer, larceny of 6 plough shares and 2 guns, sentence 10 years, committed 15 Apr 1853 at Diss, previous prisons, Norfolk 1m 20d, Millbank 15d, Pentonville 15m 12 d, good conduct at all prisons, father John Sheldrake, thatcher, Burston, Diss; previous conviction, June 1852, stealing 5 ducks and 14 chickens (6 weeks), once convicted before the magistrate for trespass (paid the fine); protestant. On 15 Dec 1854 he was admitted to Portsmouth Prison. On 29 Jun 1857 Charles was discharged under licence from Portsmouth Prison. Charles married Charlotte SELF c. 1858 - reg: Depwade Norfolk.4 He died c. 1861 in Diss, Norfolk - committed suicide.5

 

 

Charlotte SELF, daughter of Unknown SELF ( - ), was born c. 1837 in Stuston, Suffolk. She married Richard PRENTICE c. 1869.6 She appeared in the census in 1871 at Audly End, Burston, Norfolk in Burston - 34, living with husband Richard (40, farmer of 7 acres), children Osborn (11), Reuben (10), Rosetta (7) and Benjamin (1), and grandfather Thomas SELF (widower, 93).7 She appeared in the census in 1881 in Burston - 44, living with husband Richard (50, farmer) and children Benjamin (12, scholar), Osborn C SHELDRAKE (21, coal porter), Reuben J SHELDRAKE (19, agricultural labourer) and Rosilla SHELDRAKE (17, dressmaker).8 She died c. 1924 in Burston.9,10 She was buried on 21 Mar 1924 in Burston.10 She and Charles SHELDRAKE had the following children:

 

 

 

Osborne Charles SHELDRAKE (c. 1861-c. 1911). Osborne was born c. 1861 in Burston.11 He was baptised on 11 Aug 1861 in Burston. - same time as brother Reuben.11 Osborne appeared in the census in 1871 at Audly End, Burston, Norfolk in Burston - 11, living with parents Richard (40, farmer of 7 acres) and Charlotte (34), siblings Reuben (10), Rosetta (7) and Benjamin (1), and great grandfather Thomas SELF (widower, 93).7 He appeared in the census in 1881 in Burston - 21, coal porter, living with stepfather Richard PRENTICE (50, farmer), mother Charlotte PRENTICE, step brother Benjamin PRENTICE (12, scholar), and siblings Reuben J (19, agricultural labourer) and Rosilla (17, dressmaker).8 He died c. 1911.

 

 

Reuben SHELDRAKE (c. 1861-c. 1946). Reuben was born c. 1861 in Burston. He was baptised on 11 Aug 1861 in Burston. - same time as brother Osborne Charles.11 Reuben appeared in the census in 1871 at Audly End, Burston, Norfolk in Burston - 10, living with parents Richard (40, farmer of 7 acres) and Charlotte (34), siblings Osborn (11), Rosetta (7) and Benjamin (1), and great grandfather Thomas SELF (widower, 93).7 He appeared in the census in 1881 in Burston - 19, agricultural labourer, living with stepfather Richard PRENTICE (50, farmer), mother Charlotte PRENTICE, step brother Benjamin PRENTICE (12, scholar), and siblings Osborn C (21, coal porter) and Rosilla (17, dressmaker).8 He died c. 1946.
