Perry SHELDRAKE (1832-c. 1914)

 

Perry SHELDRAKE, son of John SHELDRAKE (c. 1796- ) and Elizabeth GLADWELL (c. 1796- ), was born on 4 Mar 1832 in Burston, Norfolk.1 He was baptised on 21 Mar 1832 in Burston. - b. 04.03.1832; parents John and Elizabeth.1 Perry appeared in the census in 1841 in Burston - 10, living with parents John (45, thatcher) and Elizabeth (45), and siblings Elizabeth (20), James (15, agricultural labourer), Solomon (14, agricultural labourer), Charles (7), Eleanor (6) and Henry (4).2 He appeared in the census in 1851 at Walcot Green, Diss, Norfolk in Diss, Norfolk - 19, servant, living in the household of Philip CARVER (33, farmer of 130 acres employing 4 labourers).3 He married Drusilla LEATHERS on 25 Oct 1854 in Diss. The marriage was witnessed by Leonard LEFFLY and Phoebe NUNN. The ceremony was conducted by Rev. H J Shephard.4,5 He appeared in the census in 1861 at Walcot Green in Diss - 27, agricultural labourer, living with wife Drusilla (26) and children Harriot (8, scholar), Emma (4), Anna M (3), Eliza (1) and Maria (4 mos).6 He appeared in the census in 1871 at Walcot Green in Diss - 40, agricultural labourer, living with wife Drusilla (35) and children Emma (14), Anna M (13), Minnie (10), George (8), James (4), Ellen (2), John (2) and Eliza J (10 mos).7 He died c. 1914.8

 

 

Drusilla LEATHERS, daughter of Neeve Leathers LEATHERS ( - ) and Mary UNKNOWN ( - ), was born on 14 Jun 1835 in Diss.9 She was baptised on 12 Jul 1835 in Diss. - at Wesleyan Methodist Chapel.9 Drusilla appeared in the census in 1861 at Walcot Green in Diss - 26, living with husband Perry (27, agricultural labourer) and children Harriot (8, scholar), Emma (4), Anna M (3), Eliza (1) and Maria (4 mos).6 She appeared in the census in 1871 at Walcot Green in Diss - 35, living with husband Perry (40, agricultural labourer) and children Emma (14), Anna M (13), Minnie (10), George (8), James (4), Ellen (2), John (2) and Eliza J (10 mos).7 She died c. 1905.10,11 She was buried on 8 Sep 1905 in Diss.11 She and Perry SHELDRAKE had the following children:

Eliza Jane SHELDRAKE (1870-1953). Eliza was born on 16 May 1870 in Diss.12,13 She was baptised on 3 Jul 1870 in Diss. - father Perry a labourer.14 Eliza appeared in the census in 1871 at Walcot Green in Diss - 10 mos, living with parents Perry (40, agricultural labourer) and Druscilla (35), and siblings Emma (14), Anna M (13), Minnie (10), George (8), James (4), Ellen (3) and John (2).15 She appeared in the census in 1881 at Walcot Green Road in Diss - 10, scholar, living with parents Perry (50, agricultural labourer) and Druscilla (45), siblings George (18, agricultural labourer), James (14, agricultural labourer), Ellen (13), John (12, scholar), William P (9, scholar) and Mary A (7, scholar), and niece Druscilla (1).16 She appeared in the census in 1891 at Walcot Green in Diss - 20, brush maker, living with parents Perry (60, agricultural labourer) and Druscilla (55), brother William (19, agricultural labourer), and niece Druscilla Jane (11).17 She and Horace LANCHESTER had marriage banns published on 23 Sep 1894 in Kenninghall, Norfolk, the marriage banns were read by Rev. W W TYLER. - other dates were 30.09.1894 and 07.10.1894, bride from Diss.18 Eliza married Horace LANCHESTER on 10 Oct 1894 in Hargham, Norfolk.19,20 She appeared in the census in 1901 at Bury Road in Palgrave, Suffolk - 29, living with husband Horace (29, horseman on farm) and sons Horace G (5) and Frederick N (11 mos).21 She appeared in the census in 1911 at Chase's Farm Bury Road in Palgrave - 38, living with husband Horace (38, working farm bailiff), and children Frederick (10, scholar) and May (5).22 On 18 Oct 1924 Eliza. saw her son Frederick leave for Melbourne, Australia on board the ship "Ormez", to return home on the 18.07.1929 aboard the "Baradine" but going again to Melbourne on 18.01.1903 aboard the "Orford"; for all his movements his home address was given as Church Road, Brome, Suffolk. Eliza was recorded on the 1939 Register living at Bates Lane in Fersfield, Norfolk. - housework, b. 16.05.1871.12 Eliza died on 8 Sep 1953 in Fersfield - aged 82 years.23 She was buried on 17 Sep 1953 in Fersfield.24 On 25 Sep 1953 there was a newspaper report: Diss Express, 25th September 1953, page 4

 

MRS. E. J. LANCHESTER

(FERSFIELD)

 

The funeral took place on Thursday week at Fersfield Parish Church of Mrs. Eliza Jane Lanchester, aged 82, of Bates Lane, Fersfield. Mrs. Lanchester was born at Walcot Green, Diss, and was married at Diss Church to Mr. H. Lanchester. She Had been living at Fersfield about eighteen years. She leaves a widower, one daughter and one son [Frederick N] who is living in Australia.

 

The funeral service was taken by the Rev. K. Liley (The Lophams) and the organist for the hymn "Rock of Ages" was Mr. Kirkman.

 

The immediate mourners were: the widower; Miss M. Lanchester daughter; Mr. and Mrs. A. Hales, sister and brother-in-law; , sister-in-law; Mrs. J. Lanchester, sister-in-law; Mrs. Trudgill, niece; Mr. R. Mark, nephew.

 

Others present included Mrs. Calver, Mrs. Jeffery and Mrs. Vernon. Eliza. had a sister born before her also named Eliza Jane who died in January 1870, buried on 20.01.1870, after whom she may have been named.
