John EATON, 25, innkeeper, born in Norfolk, living with wife Hebe (21), daughter Ann (9 mos), Eliza ATKINS (16), Sarah HART (14), Robert TYLER (15) and Matilda FARROW (15); address The Street, South Lopham. [HO107 Piece 775 Book 9 Folio 15 Page 24 Schedule 1315]

{John, son of John (1790-1879) and Elizabeth (1794-1874, nee CALTON), was born in South Lopham in 1813, and baptised there on 11 Jul 1813. On 2 Oct 1838 he married Hebe BUCKENHAM (1821-1897) in Bressingham, both resident there at the time. They went on to have 12 children. No death has yet been found for John that can be proved.}

Scholar) and Ann Elizabeth (4, scholar), servant Christiana MILLS (22), and boarders David DADE (54, agricultural labourer) and John BALLS (25, linen weaver journeyman); address The Village, South Lopham. [Joseph, son of Joseph (1796-1852( and Marian (1799-1879), was born in Gressenhall in 1829, and was baptised there on 5 Dec 1829. He married Ann Elizabeth FOX (1830-1866) in the Parish Church in Lakenham on 21 Apr 1850. Joseph died on 10 Oct 1875; estate probated on 9 Mar 1878; “MACE Joseph. 23 March. The Will of Joseph Mace of Old-Palace-road in the Hamlet of Heigham in the City of Norwich Gentleman who died 10 October 1875 at Old-Palace-road was proved at the Principal Registry by Thomas Hanworth Rackham of Norwich Gentleman one of the Executors. Personal Estate under £20.”]

1871 Census

William BUCKENHAM, 55, publican, born in North Lopham, living with wife Mary Ann (61), son Edward Alfred (21, lawyers clerk), George MURTON (15, ostler), and Sophia LONG (14, domestic servant); address White Horse, South Lopham. [RG10 Piece 1840 Folio 85 Page 6 Schedule 36]

[William BUCKENHAM, son of John (1789-1844) and Susan Lovack (1789-1851, nee SHAW) was born on 10 Apr 1818 in North Lopham, and was baptised there on 16 Jul 1816. He and Maryann STEEL were married on 24 Oct 1848 in Garboldisham, Norfolk. He died on 5 Jun 1878 and was buried there on 10 Jun. His estate was probated on 20 Aug 1878, “BUCKENHAM William. 20 August. The Will of William Buckenham late of South Lopham in the County of Norfolk Innkeeper who died 5 June 1878 at South Lopham was proved at Norwich by Edward Alfred Buckenham of Victoria-road Diss in the County Accountant the Son one of the Executors. Personal Estate un £300.”.]

BUCKENHAM – 5th inst., at South Lopham, aged 83 years, Mr. William Buckenham, of the White Horse inn, highly respected by all who knew him.

1881 Census

Arthur BUCK, 31, innkeeper, born in Barningham, Suffolk, living with wife Elizabeth (32), daughter Edith L (1 mo), brother Henry (26, draper), and domestic servant Susanna GARROD (16); address White Horse Inn, South Lopham. [RG11 Piece 1973 Folio 65 Page 5 Schedule 207]

(Arthur William BUCK, son of Henry (1819-) and Mary (1814-1917), was born in Barningham, Suffolk in 1850. He married Elizabeth QUANTRELL (1849-1920) on 29 Sep 1878 in South :Lopham. By 1891 he had left the pub trade and was a general labourer, still living in South Lopham. He died on 12 May 1909 and was buried in Hopton Methodist Churchyard. MI reads: “IN / LOVING MEMORY / OF / MARY BUCK, / WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE / JULY 18TH 1907, / AGED 91 YEARS. /GOD GIVETH HIS BELOVED SLEEP. / ALSO OF / ARTHUR WILLIAM BUCK / BELOVED HUSBAND OF / ELIZABETH BUCK, / AND SON OF THE ABOVE / WHO DIED MAY 12TH 1909, / AGED 59 YEARS. / ALSO OF ELIZABETH BUCK, / WHO DIED SEPT 2ND 1920, / AGED 72 YEARS.”]

1891 Census

Stephen G HOWARD, 44, publican, born in Brinkley, Cambridgeshire, living with wife Ellen (48) and children Blanche (18), Alice (13, scholar), John T (11, scholar), Lilian (8, scholar), Harry R (6, scholar) and Florence E (4, scholar); address White Horse Inn, The Street, South Lopham. [Stephen George HOWARD, son of Thomas (1806-1867) and Elizabeth (1808-1854, nee BALDWIN) was born on 13 Dec 1849 in Brinkley, Cambridgeshire, registered 1849 Q4 Newmarket Cambridgeshire Vol 14 Page 96, and baptised there on 26 May 1850. He married Ellen RICHES in Knettishall, Suffolk on 30 May 1872, registered 1872 Q2 Thetford Norfolk Vol 4B Page 677. They had at least 8 children. By 1901 he had left the pub trade and was a farmer somewhere on Diss Road, South Lopham. Stephen died on 12 Jun 1909 in South Lopham and was buried there.]

Childerhouse of the Griffin Hotel, Attleborough, for the railway employees’ supper at Attleborough. An hour’s extension was granted to Mr. William Pitchers of the White Horse Inn, Souith Lopham, on the 29th, for a band supper. …..

William PITCHERS, 48, innkeeper, born in New Buckenham, living with wife Ellen (49, assisting in business), daughter Ellen Maud (21, assisting in business), and son Reginald George (16, blacksmith’s apprentice); address White Horse Inn, The Street, South Lopham. [RG14 PN11746 RD239 SD2 ED19 SN43]

1921 Census

William PITCHERS, 58, innkeeper, living with wife Ellen (59, home duties), son William (34, draper’s buyer) and his wife Lucy (29, home duties), daughter Ellen BARKER (29, home duties) and her husband John BARKER (32, lorry driver), granddaughter Ellen BARKER (3), and niece Mabel HUGGINS (19, companion help); address White House Inn, South Green, South Lopham. [RG15 Piece 09901 Schedule 28 RD 239 RS 2 ED 19]

[William was born in New Buckenham (also given as Banham in some records), registered 1862 Q3 Guiltcross Norfolk Vol 4B Page 244, and was baptised there on 8 Mar 1863. He was living in Banham in 1871 and 1881 according to the Census returns. He married Ellen BATEMAN in 1886, registered 1886 Q1 Islington Vol 1B Page 311. The 1891 Census shows him living in St. Pancras London, a hall porter, living with his family and some BATEMAN in-laws. He died on 13 Feb 1937 in South Lopham aged 74, registered 1937 Q1 Thetford Norfolk Vol 4B Page 458. He was buried in South Lopham with a memorial giving “”In loving memory of / my dear husband / WILLIAM PITCHERS / who died 13th Feb 1937 / aged 76 years. In God’s keeping.”]

[William was born on 4 Aug 1887, He married Ada E ELSEY in 1924, registered 1824 Q1 Bromley Kent Vol 2A Page 904. Although unproved, it is thought that he died in 1966, age 77?, registered 1966 Q1 Acle Norfolk Vol 4B Page 590.]
