[Records for John are somewhat confusing. There is also a Joseph PEVERETT with very similar characteristics which creates confusion. However, it is thought that John died in about 1847 in South Lopham.]

The license of the Chequers Inn at South Lopham was transferred from Charles Chamberlain to Henry Goddard.

[James, son of Thomas (1740-1827) and Rebekah (nee SCOTT, 1740-?) was born in South Lopham on 10 Jun 1798 and baptised there on 15 July that year. He married Elizabeth LANDYMERE on 22 May 1832 and they had at least 4 children. He died on 22 May 1881 in Bottesdale, Suffolk. (There are a few different spellings of James’s surname which made research very difficult.]

Henry GODDARD, 44 [34?], builder and publican employing 4 men and 1 boy, born in Scole, living with wife Sarah (31), children Mary Jane (12, scholar), Emily (10, scholar), Samuel (8, scholar), Jessie H (5, scholar), Annie (3) and Florence M (1), and servant Elizabeth COOK (18, domestic servant); address Checkers Inn, South Lopham. 1881 Census

Henry GODDARD, 64, builder and innkeeper, born in Scole, living with wife Sarah (61) and grandson Daniel H W PAWSEY (4, scholar); address Chequers Inn, South Lopham. [RG13 Piece 1866 Folio 23 Page 9 Schedule 58]

[Henry, son of James (1797-1881) and Elizabeth, was born in Scole, Norfolk in 1835. He married Sarah ALLEN (1840-1915) on 14 Jun 1858 in Wortham, Suffolk. They had eight children. He was the landlord of The Chequers Inn for over 40 years. He died on 12 February 1909, registered 1909 Q1 Thetford Norfolk Vol 4B Page 245. A memorial for Henry and his wife Sarah in St. Andrew’s Churchyard reads “In / Loving Memory of / SARAH GODDARD / Died Sep. 24th 1915 / Aged 75 years / O death where is thy sting? / O grave where is thy victory? / In loving memory of / HENRY GODDARD / died Feb. 12th 1909 / Aged 72 years / Blessed are the dead which / Die in the Lord.”]

[Alfred, son of George (1822-1907) and Elizabeth (1821-1893, nee BULLEN), was born in Worlingham, Suffolk on 1861, registered 1861 Q2 Wangford Suffolk Vol 4A Page 715. He married Harriett Matilda BECKETT on 5 Aug 1908 in Worlingham, have previously been married to Mary Ann PLUMB. It is thought he died in 1932.]

1939 National Registration

Charles J WHARTON, b. 28 Jul 1883, licensed victualler and farmer, living with wife Sarah J (b. 15 Jul 1885, domestic duties), Evelyn (b. 28 Nov 1922, domestic farm work) and Jim (b. 5 Jun 1924, horseman and farm work) ; address Chequers Inn, South Lopham. [RG101/6588J/005/5 Letter Code: TSDJ]

[Charles John WHARTON, son of Thomas Godbold (1857-1932) and Annie Elizabeth (1858-1888, nee VEASY), was born on 28 Jul 1883, registered 1883 Q3 Hoxne Suffolk Vol 4A Page 663. After banns he married Sarah Jane FULCHER on 9 Aug 1904 in Diss. He died on 26 Dec 1957 in South Lopham. He was buried in South Lopham. His memorial reads, “IN / LOVING MEMORY OF / A DEAR WIFE & MOTHER / SARAH JANE WHARTON, / WHO PASSED AWAY 11TH APRIL 1950 / AGED 64 YEARS / PEACE PERFECT PEACE / ALSO OF / A DEAR HUSBAND AND FATHER / CVHARLES JOHN WHARTON / WHO DIED 26TH Dec. 1957 / AGED 73 YEARS. / LOVE’S LASTING REMEMBRANCE.” His estate was probated on 10 Apr 1958, “WHARTON Charles John of The Chequers Inn South Lopham Norfolk died 26 December 1957 Administration Norwich to Charles James Wharton haulage contractor. Effects £511 7s. 1d.”]
