The Burrows
(Betty Morley)

Basil Thomas Burrows was born in 31st August 1891 at Kenninghall. His parents were Thomas, a miller, and Selina. Basil was baptised in May 1893 together with his brother Frederick ( who had been born in 1890) and a couple of Holman children. The Burrows family lived in Mill Lane, East Church Street.

In May 1893 Thomas Burrows died and in 1894 Seliina remarried to Frederick Holman.

In the 1901 census Selina is still living at Mill Lane, East Church Street and carrying on a business as miller. She says she is a widow and the family consists of Frederick Burrows aged 9 and Basil Burrows aged 8 (these ages are obviously wrong) and a son Palmer Holman aged 6, and daughters Gertrude Holman aged 3 and Selina Holman aged 3 months.

Basil is actually also recorded as living as a nephew at the house of Walter and Maria Linstead in Tibenham.

In 1911 Selina is still at the same address and still calling herself a widow but she now has three more children – Annie aged 10, Stanley aged 8 and Ernest aged 5. The children mentioned in the 1901 census are still there apart from Basil, who was actually living at Botesdale in the house of Walter Hayward. No death of Frederick Holman has been found.

During WW1 Basil signed up as Driver 234258 Royal Horse and Field Artillery. He was wounded and discharged in October 1918. He worked at Row Farm, Thwaite Green, Fersfield, which he eventually purchased.

In 1919 Basil married Kathleen Rampley and they eventually purchased and moved to Wood Farm, Stone Lane , Fersfield.

In the 1939 Register we find Basil and Kathleen living at Stone Lane Farm with their son Frederick who was born in 1923. In 1948 Frederick married Irene Bussey and they had three children. Basil died in 1980 and Kathleen in 1985. Frederick farmed at Stone Lane until his death in 2008. The farm has now been sold but Basil’s grandchildren still live in the farmhouse.
