   Diss Town paid an unrenumerative visit to Sheringharn in a Norfolk and Suffolk League match on Saturday, being beaten by two goals to nil. A determined defence and fine sound forwards brought about the Town’s downfall, and yet, on several occasions, they forced matters to such an extent that a draw would have been a happier result.

   Sheringham’s goals were scored by half backs Farrow and Heir. These two players, with West, were no doubt the most successful of the home team.

   In the second half Diss had slightly more of the play and, aided by the wind, swept down upon the Sheringham goal in fine style, but that little extra finishing touch was never to be seen. Bushell and Harrison, the home backs, were forced to extend themselves. when Diss attacked.

   John Thornton, Hobson and Co. conducted a sucessful sale of Large Black Pigs at Reading Cattle Market on Wednesday, when the average prices were £10 10s. 3d. for served gilts, £6 5d. 9d. for empty gilt, £16 5s. 6d. for boars, and £10 13s. 6d. for gilts crossed with Large White boars. Top price was realised by Messrs. Truscott Rros, of St. Austell, Cornwall, with their seven-months-old boar, Trewithen Dandy, which was bought by Mr. G. Duck, of Rickwrth. Sussex, for 23 guineas. Top price for a gilt was 17 guineas, paid by Mr. F. G. Alexander, of Diss, Norfolk, for Tartar Rosalind 2nd, the property of Mr. G. A. Goodchild, of Great Yeldham, Essex. Sixteen guinats was paid by Mr. U. Coot, of Silchester, for Tartar Rosalind 1st, the property of Mr. Goodehild. Other prices paid included several of 13½ guineas, and many between 10 and 13 guineas.

   Played at Feltwell on Saturday. Bolton won the toss and chose to play with the very strong wind, which was blowing from end to end. From the start the Diss forwards were soon into action and after five minutes took the lead by a fine goal by C. PIPER from a centre from Manning. “Pile-drivers” from W. Piper and F. Leonard were saved time and again by the Feltwell goalkeeper. who was in fine form. In a breakaway, Feltwell equalised.

   Diss soon added another goal, the scorer being C. PIPER. Again the Diss forwards seemed to be doing too much short passing, instead of shooting for goal. Half-time came with the score of 2-1 in Diss’ favour.

   On the re-start, the airmen kept the Diss defence under pressure for a long period, then the forwards got going again. Piper and Wilby doing a great deal of work. but try as they could the Air Force goalkeeper could not be beaten. Feltwell fought back and scored three quick goals, and this made Diss go all out, but it was of no use, the forwards missed chances which might have been turned to account. Whether it was the greasy ground or not, only the players know. It was grand to see “Old Ben” dribbling his way into the Feltwell penalty area only to see his shot go inches wide of the mark. Feltwell scored three more goals in breakaways, making the score 6-2. If the Diss forwards had taken their chances instead of trying to combine, a different result would have been declared.

   The wedding at West Hartlepool Salvation Army Citadel this atternoon of Miss Vera Dorothy Horsley, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Horsley, fish merchants, of Murray Street, and Mr. Harold George Rackham, second son of Mr. and Mrs. G. N. Rackham, builders and contractors, Denmark Green, Diss, Norfolk, was a real amily affair.

   Miss Horsley’s brother, Captain A. F. Horsley, of Diss. officiated. Mr. John Horsley, another brother, was at the organ; Mr. Harold Horsley was the best man; the groomsmen were Mr. Wiliam and Mr. James Horsley, and two of the bridesmaids were sisters, while 18 of the songsters, who numbered 35, were cousins, aunts, nieces, and nephews, and other close relations.

   With the exception of the mother of the bride and the mother of the bridegroom, all who took part wore Salvation Army uniforms.

   The bride is a songster In the local Salvation Army, and the bridegroom Is band secretary at Diss. The bride’s father. who gave her away, is songster leader. and the bridegroom’s father is a bandsman. All other members of the Horsley family are connected one way or another with the Salvation Army, most of them being songsters.

   The bridesmaids were Misses Lilian and Mary Elizabeth Horsley (sisters of the bride), Miss Kathleen Rackham (sister cf the bridegroom), and Miss Blanche Last (cousin of the bridegroom).

   The bride’s mother wore blue georgette and the bridegroom’s mother silk marocain.

   There was a reception at the Citadel, attended by a large number of guests. The couple afterwards left on a motoring honeymoon in Suffolk and Norfolk. The bride’s travelling dress was a burgundy coloured coat, with lamb skin trimmings.

   Over 100 presents were received.

   The wedding of Miss Marjorie Hind, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Hind, of The Limes, Adams Hill, Nottingham, and Mr. William I. Kerry, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Kerry, of Park-road, Diss, Norfolk, took place today at the New Lenten Methodist Church. Derby-road. The officiating ministers were the Rev. A. C. George and the Rev. A. Williams Bootie.

   The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a silver brocade gown, cut on classical lines, and falling into a long train and lined with silver lame. A veil was held in place by a headdress of camelias and sprigs of heather. She carried lilies of the valley, and was attended by the Misses Barbara Hind (sister). Mabel Osborne and Margaret Nichols (cousins of tbe bridegroom), Nora Clower and Joan Wallis (friends), and Master John Hind cousin.

   The bridesmaids wore dresses of petunia velvet, cut on Edwardian lines, with hats of the same period in silver lame, trimmed with ostrich plumes of petunia shade. They carried muffs of the same velvet, trimmed with silver and sprays of anemonies and posies of violets and forget-me-nots. Master John Hind, as page, wore a velvet suit with cravat and frills of silver lace.

   The groomsmen were Messrs. G. Nichols, A. Cryer and R. Cheatham, and Mr. Beaver was at the organ.

   There were over a hundred guests at the reception at the Mikado Cafe. The honeymoon is being spent in London and the south.

   Skelton is a recurrent name in the various books and lectures of criticism that are swallowed by serious and semi-serious students as they plough their way through “Eng. Lit.” at school and University: like Johnson, his influence is estimated while his works lie unread.

   There are a few phrases about him, and one rings the changes—“the greatest poet between Chaucer and Spenser,” “the new treatment of the old traditions,” “the herald of the Golden Age,” and so on. They are easy, and Skelton is so dim a figure that there is nothing much else; they save the bother of going through verse often enough obscure and turgid.

   Skelton was born somewhere round 1460, in Cumberland, or perhaps Norfolk; he went to Cambridge. and had some sort of tutorial post to Henry VIII.; he retired to Diss in Norfolk, where he had the living: and he died about 1520.

   This monograph, by a lecturer at the University College, Exeter, does all that can be done. It needs must be tenuous, dealing with possibilities and probabilities: it has to include literary criticism of work that, after all, has not a great deal to say to us. It is scholarly, and good reading if your tastes happen to lie in the direction of intellectual detective work, but in the last event it is a series of guesses. They are sensible, and we can quarrel with none of them - but they still remain guesses.

   Scole Boys visited Diss on Saturday and after a good game drew 3-3. Scole Roys attacked strongly in the opening stages and after about five minutes took the lead, Riches scoring after Cobb had failed to clear a shot from Oakes. The homesters defended well and kept the visitors from adding to their lead. Cobb saved several dangerous shots during the numerous attacks by the Scole forwards.

   Half-time: Diss Boys 0, Scole Boys 1.

   On the resumption Diss Boys fought hard for the equaliser and were rewarded when Green scored. A few minutes later the visitors again took the lead, Oakes scoring off a centre from the right. They went further ahead about 15 minutes from the end, Riches scoring off a centre from Broadbent. Diss fought back and reduced the lead through Wright. Just before the end, while the Scole backs were appealing for offside, Montague was allowed to run on and equalise.

   Result: Diss Boys 3, Scole Boys 3.

MR. H. A. CHAPMAN.—The funeral took place on Saturday at Woodhouse cemetery of Mr. Harry Albert Chapman (92), following a service held at St. Paul’s Methodist Church. conducted by the Rev. Stanley K. Lamming, B.A., who also officiated at the graveside. Mr. W. T. Anderson was the organist. Mr. Chapman was the oldest resident of Woodhouse. He lived with his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. T. Chapman, of 2, Vicar Lane, Woodhouse, and died on Wednesday, April 5th. He was proud of his great age. He was very active and very well respected. He only retired five years ago. He was caretaker at Woodhouse St. Paul’s Methodist Church for 36 years. The duties were taken over by his son, Mr. T. Chapman, when he retired. He was a prominent member of the church. He was very fond of gardening. He was born at Diss, in Norfolk, and came to reside at Woodhouse when only five years old. His grandfather Chapman lived to be 92, but his parents died at an early age. Mrs. Chapman died twelve years ago. Mr. Chapman leaves four sons. The mourners were Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Chapman, Mr. and Mrs. B. Chapman, Mr. and Mrs. A. Chapman, Mr. and Mrs. T. Chapman (sons and daughters-in-law), Mr. and Mrs. W. Kime (stepson and daughter-in-law), Mr. and Mrs. F A. Chapman, Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Spurr, Miss Alice Chapman, Miss Annie Chapman, Miss Nellie Chapman, Mr. Harold Kime, Mr. Bernard Chapman and Mr. Cyril Chapman (grandchildren), Mrs. M. Beech (sister-in-law), Mr. and Mrs. C. Grundy (brother-in-law and sister-in-law), and numerous friends, including Mrs. Harry Tofield, a former employer. The bearers were Messrs J. H. Blount, Marriott Ellis, Walter Morley, B. Kendall, G. Booth and G. W. Ellis. There were many wreaths and floral tributes.

   Death yesterday separated for the first time Britain’s second-oldest married couple, Mr. and Mrs. Ezekiel Larter, of Diss (Norfolk), Mr. Larter, who was 94, dying after a three months' illness. Mr. and Mrs. Larter had been married for 71 years. Mrs. Larter, who is in excellent health, is 91. During the whole of their married life they had never been separated. They had 15 children.

   Mr. Larter was the Post Office’s oldest pensioner. He had been drawing his postman’s pension for 33 years.

A TEAM of tight-rope walkers was one short at a gymkhana at Diss, Norfolk, on Saturday.

It looked as though the best turn of the night would have to be cancelled until -

Seventeen-year-old Zoe Birkbeck, of North Lopham, came forward and volunteered to help out the team.

She perched on the shoulder of a tight-rope walker as he made two trips across a swaying wire 70 feet above the arena.

And Zoe’s comment afterwards was: “It was a grand adventure. I think I shall take up tight-rope walking as a hobby.”

SOMEWHERE in Egypt is a young Norfolk soldier who is unaware that more than 200 young women in all parts of Great Britain are writing every day proposing marriage to him.

   The soldier, who is 27 years old, wrote to Mr. C. W. Cotton, clerk to the Diss (Norfolk) Urban District Council, last week-end asking for assistance in finding a young lady. He explained that he had been serving abroad for ten years and has only returned home once for six months' leave and has been unable to find a wife.

   Yesterday Mr. Cotton said that he is snowed under with applications. He added sacks full of letters continue to arrive by every post.
