Shelfanger - Great War Militia

WW1 Soldiers

It is easy to simply identify the Great War soldiers, sailors and airmen for a place by looking at the memorial or roll of honour and assume that they were only ones with a connection to that place who fought.

The dedication of the Shelfanger Memorial was recorded in an article in the Diss Express.

There were some anomalies in getting the names of those eligible for inclusion on the original lists, so not all are always named. Some only contain the fallen, excluding those others who fought, some of whom were maybe wounded.

A search was made for all military men where there was any connection, however remote, to Shelfanger; quite a number came to light, and it is all these who hopefully will be listed below, showing what has been found out about them - for some there is an abundance of information, some almost nothing.

The symbol indicates the man lost his life, either killed in action or later as a direct result of wounds received in battle. Hovering over the symbol will show the date of death. The indicates he was wounded in the line of duty but survived the war, and hovering over the symbol will show the date wounded. The candle On Shelfanger War Memorialshows the name is on the Shelfanger War Memorial. The indicates he was linked to other nearby villages, hovering over the symbol will show the village name, clicking on it will take you to that page if it is available.

It is hoped that this section will be expanded over time. If anyone has any information (especially any photographs) about any of the men named below and are willing to share it, please make contact.
