The Village Sign .....

Coaches travelling from London to Norwich passed through the coaching stop at Botesdale. St. Botolph was a Saxon monk, patron of sailors, agricultural workers and travellers. His feast day is 17th June.


The Market Place .....

Founded as a Thursday market in 1220 it continued until the 18th century. Botesdale was then part of Redgrave and was important, being on the main Bury to Lowestoft road, having more than 14 shops and 52 stalls in 1289. The Abbot of Bury St. Edmunds was the Lord of the Manor and had two windmills, a pillory and ducking stool.
