• ** The 1911 Census return lists the occupations of the residents. These are not always easy to categorise but there are a set of options used by the Census to do this. They are somewhat complex and many are open to differing interpretations by enumerators.
• *** It is often very difficult to assign a single ‘keyword category’ to a person’s occupation as the Census was not always specific enough to allow for this. Best efforts have been given to make this as useful as possible. Some people will have more than one keyword so will appear in more than one list. Because of the diversity of the occupation descriptions and places of work, the categories can either be a trade of profession (eg: carpentry), or could be an indication of where the occupation takes place (eg: brewery).
