Hedley Dick CATTERMOLE was born on 6 Jun 1883 in Roydon, Norfolk.1,2,3 He was baptised on 29 Jun 1883 in Roydon. - parents Headley Dick and Rachel.1 Hedley appeared in the census in 1891 at Damgate Street in Diss, Norfolk - 7, scholar, living with parents HD (29, brewers labourer) and R (28), and siblings Jim (9, scholar), Tom (5, scholar) and Lious? (1). No record can be found for Hedley in the 1901 Census, but he was not living with his parents in Shelfanger Road, Diss at the time. Hedley and Alice Ella MARKWELL had marriage banns published on 26 Jun 1904 in Diss. - other dates were 03/07/1904 and 10.07.1904.4 Hedley married Alice Ella MARKWELL on 14 Jul 1904 in Diss - after banns. The marriage was witnessed by M MARSHALL and Jesse NUNN. The ceremony was conducted by Rev. C MANNING.5,6 In 1905 the Electoral Register showed him living at Shelfanger Road, Diss, Norfolk - an occupational voter, qualified by dwelling house. Hedley appeared in the census in 1911 at Denmark Green, Roydon, Norfolk in Roydon - 27, brewers labourer, living with wife Alice (29), and children Ivy Edna May (5) and Leonard J I (5 mos).7 In 1915 the Electoral Register showed him living at 48 Shelfanger Road, Diss, Norfolk - an occupational voter, qualified by dwelling house. Hedley was attested on 18 Jan 1915.8 Frm 19 Jan 1915 to 27 Jan 1915 Hedley was posted to the Norfolk Regiment Depot. On 28 Jan 1915 he joined the 10th Batt. Norfolk Regiment. On 1 Sep 1916 he was transferred to the 25th Training Res. (possibly the Regimental Police of the Bedfordshire Regiment). On 19 Sep 1918 he he made a statement about his medical condition (eyesight). On 20 Sep 1918 he was recommended for discharge by the Medical Officer in charge of his case as he was permanently unfit for duty. He was discharged on 5 Oct 1918 no longer physically fit due to defective eyesight. He appeared in the census in 1921 at Tottington Lane in Roydon - 38:01, storeman working for Youngs Crawshay brewers, living with wife Alice (39:04, home duties) and children Ivy (15:02, out of work), Leonard (10:04, scholar) and Doris (5:02, scholar).9 In 1925 the Electoral Register showed him living at Tottington Lane, Roydon, Norfolk - qualified by residence and occupation. Hedley was recorded on the 1939 Register living at Tottington Lane in Roydon. - b. 06.06.1883, yardman, living with wife Alice E (b. 18.10.1882, unpaid domestic duties) - also 5 others, relationship to household unknown.2 Hedley died on 23 Apr 1956 in Roydon - living at 2 Charles Street at time of death.10,11 He was buried on 26 Apr 1956 in Roydon.11 He had his estate probated on 30 Jun 1956 in Norwich, Norfolk - "CATTERMOLE Hedley Dick of 2 Charles-terrace Roydon Norfolk died 23 April 1956 Administration Norwich 30 June [1956] to Leonard John Ivan Cattermole [so0n] lorry driver. Alice Ella MARKWELL was born on 18 Oct 1882 in Diss. She appeared in the census in 1891 at Denmark Green in Diss - 10, scholar, living with parents Charles (31, bricklayer) and Mary A (28), and siblings May (9, scholar), Clare (7, scholar), Charles (5, scholar) and John (3, scholar).13 She appeared in the census in 1901 at Denmark Street in Diss - 20, corset maker, living with parents Charles 42, builder) and Mary A (40), siblings May (19, domestic nurse maid), Clara (17), Charles (15, yarn weaver's job boy), John (14, builder's apprentice) and Frank I (8), and lodger John SANDY (36, ostler at livery stable).14 She appeared in the census in 1911 at Denmark Green, Roydon, Norfolk in Roydon - 29, living with husband Hedley Dick (27, brewers labourer), and children Ivy Edna May (5) and Leonard J I (5 mos).7 She appeared in the census in 1921 at Tottington Lane in Roydon - 39:04, home duties, living with husband Hedley (38:01, storeman working for Youngs Crawshay brewers) and children Ivy (15:02, out of work), Leonard (10:04, scholar) and Doris (5:02, scholar).9 She was recorded on the 1939 Register living at Tottington Lane in Roydon. - b. 18.10.1882, unpaid domestic duties, living with husband Hedley D (b. 06.06.1883, yardman) - also 5 others, relationship to household unknown.2 Alice died c. 1945 in Roydon.15 She was buried on 9 May 1945 in Roydon, the ceremony was conducted by Rev. Ivy Edna May CATTERMOLE (c. 1906- ). Ivy was born c. 1906 in Roydon. She appeared in the census in 1911 at Denmark Green, Roydon, Norfolk in Roydon - 5, living with parents Hedley Dick (27, brewers labourer) and Alice Ella (29), and brother Leonard J I (5 mos).7 She appeared in the census in 1921 at Tottington Lane in Roydon - 15:02, out of work, living with parents Hedley (38:01, storeman working for Youngs Crawshay brewers) and Alice (39:04, home duties), and siblings Leonard (10:04, scholar) and Doris (5:02, scholar).9

 

 

Leonard John Ivan CATTERMOLE (1910-c. 1981). Leonard was born on 19 Oct 1910 in Roydon.16,17,18 He was baptised on 18 Nov 1910 in Diss.16 He appeared in the census in 1911 at Denmark Green, Roydon, Norfolk in Roydon - 5 mos, living with parents Hedley Dick (27, brewers labourer) and Alice Ella (29), and sister Ivy Edna May (5).7 He appeared in the census in 1921 at Tottington Lane in Roydon - 10:04, scholar, living with parents Hedley (38:01, storeman working for Youngs Crawshay brewers) and Alice (39:04, home duties), and sisters Ivy (15:02, out of work) and Doris (5:02, scholar).9 He and Dorothy WHISTLECRAFT had marriage banns published on 15 Mar 1936 in Roydon. - other dates were 22.03.1936 and 29.03.1936.19 Leonard married Dorothy WHISTLECRAFT on 12 Apr 1936 in Roydon - reg: Depwade, Norfolk.20 He was recorded on the 1939 Register living at 36 Denmark Street in Diss. - b. 19.10.1910, lorry driver, living with wife Dorothy (b. 04.04.1911, unpaid domestic duties).18 Leonard died c. 1981 - reg: Depwade Norfolk, b. 19.10.1910.21 He is commorated in Diss Cemetery - "IN LOVING / MEMORY OF / L. J. I. CATTERMOLE / A DEAR HUSBAND / DAD AND GRANDAD / 1910 - 1981".

 

 

Doris CATTERMOLE (c. 1916- ). Doris was born c. 1916. She appeared in the census in 1921 at Tottington Lane in Roydon - 5:02, scholar, living with parents Hedley (38:01, storeman working for Youngs Crawshay brewers) and Alice (39:04, home duties), and siblings Ivy (15:02, out of work) and Leonard (10:04, scholar).9
