Emma Jessie BULLEN (1892-c. 1968)

 

Emma Jessie BULLEN, daughter of James BULLEN (c. 1855-c. 1921) and Emma LAST (1856-1940), was born on 9 Feb 1892 in Diss, Norfolk.1,2 She appeared in the census in 1901 at Shelfanger Road in Diss - age 9, living with parents James (45, grocer) and Emma (44), and siblings Joe (11) and Flora (6).3 She was educated at Municipal Secondary Girls School in Norwich, Norfolk frm 16 Jan 1906 to 22 Jul 1909. and granted exemption from tuition fees by Norfolk Education Committee for 3 years and took up a pupil teachership upon leaving. Emma was baptised on 15 Jan 1909 in Diss. - baptised as an adult along with sister Flora, parents James and Emma, father a shopkeeper, living at Shelfanger Road in Diss.1 Emma appeared in the census in 1911 at Shelfanger Road in Diss - age 19, pupil teacher, living with parents James (55, general shopkeeper) and Emma (54), and siblings Joe (21, assisting in business) and Flora (16).4 Frm 1913 to 1915 she was an assistant teacher in Outwell, Cambridgeshire. Frm 1915 to 1920 she was an assistant teacher in Coltishall, Norfolk. On 1 Feb 1918 she. is recognised by the Teachers Registration Council. Her professional address is given as St. James Villa, Diss. Frm 1920 to 1925 Emma was a headteacher in Fersfield, Norfolk. Frm 1925 to 1926 she was a headteacher in Roydon, Norfolk. She was recorded on the 1939 Register living at 25 Shelfanger Road in Diss. - b. 09.02.1892, domestic duties at home.5 Emma married William Robert WHITE c. 1946 - reg: Staines Middlesex.6 She died c. 1968 - reg: Acle Norfolk.7

 

 

The 1939 Registration gives a married name for Emma as WHITE - only one marriage has been found to support this, not 100% proven.

 

 

Assuming that the 1939 Registration is correct in that she married and became WHITE, the only appropriate death is of an Emma J WHITE, born 1892, who died in Acle in 1968.

 

 

William Robert WHITE was born c. 1887. He died c. 1962.
