The weary are at rest JOHN THOMAS BUCKLEY POTTER died January 15th 1876 aged 85 years
"I don't know a huge amount about John Thomas Buckley Potter, but am happy to share what I have with you. He is the son of Richard Huddleston Potter and his wife Charlotte née Baumgarten. Richard was an organist at St Brides Fleet Street, London. Richard's own father was Richard Potter, a flute maker of some renown. John's brother was Cipriani Potter, an important British composer and musician. It would be my hunch that John was also musical. Does the church have a good organ? Is it possible that the vicar brought an organist/musician with him? And perhaps he was the vicar's 'companion'?" - email from Prudence Scott
"I've done some digging on John Thomas Buckley Potter and not come up with a huge amount! However, I have established that he was born on June 10, 1790, and was baptised at St Marylebone, Westminster on 16 July 1790. I can't find him in the 1841 Census, in the 1851 Census he was living/staying with his brother Richard in St George Bloomsbury. His occupation was "Gentleman". You probably know that he was boarding with the Hooley family by the 1861 Census, and you know of the 1871 Census. It is the note in the last column of the 1871 Census which I think is the key here. The only problem is that I can't quite decipher it, but it does appear to perhaps say "Well man & Lunat....th"... Does it say he was sometime well and sometimes not? I can't tell. But it suggests that the Hooley family were looking after him, though it probably helped that he had money to pay for his living with them! Interestingly, despite the fact that he was apparently reasonably well off, I can find no record of his probate which would tell us how much he had left when he died. I hope this information is of some use to you." - email from Prudence Scott
