Royal Navy, service number M22030, documents show Engine Room Artificer and Chief Engine Room Artificer. His first known service started on 24 Aug 1918 assigned to training ship H.M.S. Indus as a boy artificer, initially signing on for 12 years. He must have signed on for further service as he retired from service on 23 Aug 1940. Jack served on several ships during his service including H.M.S. Dunedin, H.M.S. Pembroke and H.M.S. Repulse. His last ship being the heavy cruiser H.M.S. Shropshire. His awards included British War Medal (WW1) and "RN Long Service and Good conduct Medal" in 1933. One record shows Jack being awarded the British Empire Medal according to the London Gazette, 35399, 1 Jan 1942.8
