Farmer dad killed by 'friendly' bull

A FARMER was crushed to death by 1,700lb pedigree bull which turned on him as he showed it to a friend.

Dad-of-three Michael Barnes, 49, was butted by the animal and pushed against metal railings in a barn.

He was helped out of the pen by a friend and rushed to hospital. Doctors operated but he died of internal injuries. Widow Gilliam, 47, said: "He was always cautious but there was no indication this bull was going to react.

"It had been friendly and he had stoked it.

"It might have been because someone strange was there. It happened so quickly he did not have a chance."

Gillian, will carry on with the farm at Forncett St Peter, Norfolk. The bull was destroyed.

Farmer crushed to death by bull

    By Julia Horton

A FARMER'S widow this week paid tribute to her husband after he was crushed to death by a bull at the family farm.

Mr Michael Barnes died when the 1700lb animal turned on him suddenly, butting him and pinning him against a metal rail at Nivelle Farm, Forncett St Peter, last Wednesday.

Farm worker and ex-fireman, Mr Peter Edwards, gave first aid to the 49-year-old farmer before ambulance crew took him to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital where he died later from abdominal injuries.

His 47-year old widow, Gillian. said her husband had been in an enclosure showing the pedigree bull to a friend when the animal attacked him.

She said: "We had had the bull for three weeks and it had always been very friendly. Bulls are unpredictable by their very nature and Michael was well aware of that.

"He was a well-respected stockman and had worked on the farm all his life."

His family remember the popular father of three for his strong sense of fun and energy.

Mrs Barnes said: "He loved dancing and had a style all of his own. He always had the radio on when he was milking the cows and he used to have a little dance in the milking parlour."

A much loved family man he was also a prominent member of the farming community and had served as chairman on committees including the Norfolk Holstein Friesian Society and Norfolk Young Farmers.

Mrs Barnes ran the farm jointly with her husband and now plans to continue the family business with her three daughters, Rebecca, aged 23, Ruth, aged 21, and 16-year-old Naomi.

The funeral will be held at 11am today at St Peter's Church, Forncett St Peter. Donations will be divided between Long Stratton Health Centre and the accident and emergency department at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital.

  • Death:

  • c. 1998 (age 48-49)

  • Norwich, Norfolk8

  •

  • in the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital
