  • The Yarmouth Independent - 31 July 1909 - CAISTER-ON-SEA - SILVER MEDAL FOR BOATMAN GUNNS. - Among those who received honours at the hands of the King at the Investiture at Buckingham Palace was Coastguard Commissioned Boatman J. Gunns, who received the Board of Trade silver medal for gallantry in saving life when the barge Ernest Piper was wrecked near the coastguard station at Caister on 10th December. Before the life saving apparatus cart could be brought to the scene of the wreck, John Gunns swam off to the vessel at great risk with a life-line, and after two attempts got the line on board, thus enabling the crew of three men to be saved.
