Old Bailey Proceedings
Evidence given in the trial of Henry Steer and Sarah Steer of Damage to Property and Arson. WILLIAM PEACOCK (Police Inspector L). About 10 o’clock last Saturday night I was called to 14, Manor Street, and found the two prisoners and last witness there—the room was full of smoke, but the fire bad been extinguished; a portion of the mattress, sheet, and counterpane had been burnt—Mr. Oxford did not make any charge against them; the female, pointing to the male prisoner, said that he struck a match and deliberately set fire to the bed; he replied “You are a liar, you did it yourself”—the woman's face was covered with blood; she said nothing about it—I took them into custody. Cross-examined. I did not see a candle in the room; there might have been one, but the female said there was not.

Old Bailey Proceedings Evidence given in the trial of William Thompson for Theft by Pocketpicking. WILLIAM PEACOCK (Police Inspector L). The prisoner was brought to the station, and Sewell afterwards gave me a hat—I took it into the parade-ground, where the prisoner was—he jumped up from the seat, and said “That is my hat, sir,” took it from my hand, and put it on his head—he had no hat on when he was taken—Sewell said that a man went running past his barrow, and threw it underneath his barrow—the prisoner said nothing to that.

Old Bailey Proceedings Evidence given in the trial of William Ralph, Harriet Scott, Mary Ann Castle, John Howe, George Castle and John Witham for Theft, stealing from master. WILLIAM PEACOCK (Police Inspector L) I was on duty at Tower Street station on the morning of 7th June—at that time Witham was in custody in one of the cells—T visited him during the night and morning, and asked if he was all right—he said “Yes,” and he wanted to make a statement to me about the matter he was in the cell for, and requested that it might be detailed to the Magistrate—he said I know all about it; I had some of the wax given to me to sell; I offered it for sale to a foreman of Mr. Hall’s, Lambeth Road; they refused to purchase it. I left a sample; that was returned to me. I was employed by Mr. George Castle, of Union Street, Lambeth Walk; in June last a man drove up in Union Street, with a horse and cart, in front of a paper shop, near Castle's house, with three lots of wax. I weighed one of them; it weighed three-quarters of a cwt I don't remember what the others weighed. Mr. Castle was present at the time.
