John Wilson COLCHESTER was born c. 1848 in Palgrave, Suffolk. He was a Farmer. He married Charlotte MULLENGER on 28 Oct 1878 in Norwich, Norfolk. He married Elizabeth HUBBARD on 9 Dec 1907 in Norwich.

 

 

Charlotte MULLENGER was born c. 1850 in Moulton, Norfolk. She died c. 1905. She was buried on 13 Feb 1905 in Diss, Norfolk. She and John Wilson COLCHESTER had the following children:

Frederick Wilson COLCHESTER (1886-1979). Frederick was born on 10 Oct 1886 in Burston.1,2 He appeared in the census in 1891 at Long Row Slough Lane in Gissing, Norfolk - 4, living with parents John Wilson (43, farmer) and Charlotte (41), siblings Sarah Jane (9, scholar), Laura Selina (8, scholar), John Robert (8, scholar), William Worledge (7, scholar), George Albert (6), Charlotte Alice (5), Bessie Susan V (3) and Frances Fanny (2), Alice Revett COLCHESTER (27, mother's help), and servants Susan TAYLOR (19, general domestic servant) and William BETTS (18, farm servant).3 He was educated at Gissing School btw 26 Sep 1892 and 25 Oct 1901. - living at Long Row Farm, noted that last year at school was 1900. Frederick was baptised on 18 Dec 1892 in Gissing. - also 5 brothers and sisters baptised on the same day.4 Frederick appeared in the census in 1901 at Long Row in Gissing - 14, living with parents John Wilson (53, farmer) and Charlotte (51), siblings Sarah Jane (20r), Laura Selina (20), John Robert (18), George Albert (16), Charlotte Alice (15), Bessie Susan Victoria (13) and Frances Fanny (11), Charles Reginald (9) and Hettie Theodora (6), and Annie Ethel LORD (23, governess).5 He was educated at Gissing School btw 5 Nov 1901 and 26 Sep 1902. was probably home educated by governess from leaving Gissing school in 25.10.1901 and readmission on 05.11.1901 [see 1901 Census]. In 1910 the Electoral Register showed him living at - registered as a lodger (first floor, furnished bedroom) at Poplar Farm, Gissing, owned by J. U[W?]. Colchester [father?]. Frederick appeared in the census in 1911 at The Poplar in Gissing - 24, farmer's son working on farm, living with parents John Wilson (64, farmer) and Elizabeth (53), and siblings Elizabeth (30, dairy work on farm), Charlotte (25, dairy work on farm), Bessie (23, dairy work on farm), Frances (22, dairy work on farm), Charles (19 , farmer's son working on farm) and Hettie (16, dairy work on farm).6 In 1912 the Electoral Register showed him living at - registered as a lodger (first floor, furnished bedroom) at Poplar Farm, Gissing, owned by J. W. Colchester. Frederick married Harriet Alice DRAKE on 12 Dec 1914 in Cranworth with Letton, Norfolk - marriage by licence, groom a farmer resident in Gissing, Norfolk. The marriage was witnessed by C COLCHESTER and L STARKINGS.7,8 In 1915 the Electoral Register showed him living at - registered as a lodger (first floor, furnished bedroom) at Poplar Farm, Gissing, owned by J. W. Colchester. Frederick appeared in the census in 1921 at Church Farm in Thrandeston, Suffolk - 34:09, farmer, living with wife Harriett (36:09, home duties) and son Frederick (1:08).9 On 1 Jun 1923 there was a newspaper report in the Diss Express: Diss Express and Norfolk and Suffolk Journal, Friday, 1 June 1923, page 18

Frederick Wilson Colchester, farmer, Thrandeston, was sued for allowing eight store pigs to stray on the highway, on May 17th. - Defendant admitted the offence and previous warnings, but said he had tried to keep the pigs in. People left the gate open and the pigs got out. He intended in future to keep them shut up. - A fine 12/6, including costs, was inflicted. SANITARY REPORT.

 

Mr. G.H. Jones, Sanitary Inspector, reported that an application had been received from Mr. Frederick Wilson Colchester, Church Farm, Thrandeston, to be registered as a retail purveyor of Milk. The Council approved the application. He also reported that the recent gales dislodged the tiling of the Hopper House (Infectious Hospital) roof, and that portion of the bedroom ceiling needed replastering. He said it was not a big job and he was directed to have done what was necessary. - The report was passed. Order For Possession Made.

 

Mr. W. C. F. Brundell (Messrs. Brundell and Fison, Eye and Diss) mad application on behalf of Frederick Wilson Colchester, of Church Farm, Thrandeston for the possession of a cottage at Little Green, Thrandeston, occupied by Dennis Flatman. DISS PETTY SESSIONS.

 

Cycled on Pavement.

 

For riding a cycle on the footpath at Mount Street, Diss, on April 21st, Frederick Wilson Colchester, of Church Farm, Thrandeston, was fined 2/6 including costs.

 

P.-c. Mobbs stated that the offence occured about 7.40 p.m. and defendant was riding on the pavement opposite the Sarasen's Head Inn. Defendant said there was no one about and he did think that there was any harm in it. Diss Magistrate's Court

 

Farmer left his car in dangerous position

 

FOR leaving a car in a dangerous position in Park Road, Diss, on 1st June, Frederick Wilson Colchester (56), a farmer of Church Farm, Thrandeston, was fined £4 and for driving the car on the same day without a driving licence he was fined £1, last week by Diss Magistrates.

 

Giving evidence, P.c. S. Garman said that Colchester's car was parked in Park Road in such a position as to cause vehicles coming down Denmark Street, into Park Road, to be forced over to the wrong side of the road. Frederick died on 12 Feb 1979 in Thrandeston.10 He is commorated in Hingham, Norfolk - "In loving memory of Harriet Alice devoted wife of Frederick Wilson Colchester who was called to rest 7th July 1958 aged 73 years. Peace perfect Peace. Also Frederick Wilson her beloved husband died 12th February 1979 aged 92 years. Reunited".11 He had his estate probated on 5 Apr 1979 in Ipswich, Suffolk - "COLCHESTER, Frederick Wilson of Goswold Hall Thrandeston Diss Norfolk died 12 February 1979 Probate Ipswich 5 April. £10519. 791101167D".12
