Charles Edward WOODE, son of Enoch WOODE (c. 1844-c. 1903) and Elizabeth SPEAKMAN (c. 1841-c. 1916), was born on 2 May 1872 in Hindolveston, Norfolk.1 He was baptised on 7 Jul 1872 in Hindolveston. - parents Enoch and Elizabeth.2 Charles appeared in the census in 1881 in Bures St. Mary, Suffolk - 9, scholar, living with parents Enoch (37, Curate of Bures) and Elizabeth (39), brother Alfred (4), and servant Elizabeth Palmer (15).3 He appeared in the census in 1891 at 11 Green West Side in Barrow, Suffolk - 18, preparing for university, living with parents Enoch (47, curate of Barrow) and Elizabeth 49), brother Alfred F (14, school boy), and domestic servant Clara Carter (19).4 He appeared in the census in 1901 at Barrow Green in Barrow - 28, undergraduate, a visitor in the household of Frances MARSHALL (67, surgeon) and his family including Frances' daughter Margaret E who was to become Charles' wife.5 He married Margaret Ethel MARSHALL c. 1902.6 In 1908 the Electoral Register showed him living at London Road, Attleborough - qualified as an Occupation Voter. CLERICAL APPOINTMENT. - On Saturday the Rev. Charles Edward Woode, B.A., was licensed to the curacy of Fersfield.

On Sunday the new vicar of Swaffham, the Rev. F. Keeling Scott (late of Fersfield), read himself in at the morning service, and preached at the evening service to a very large congregation. In 1910 the Electoral Register showed him living at The Rectory, Fersfield - qualified as an Occupation Voter. Charles appeared in the census in 1911 at The Rectory in Fersfield, Norfolk - 38, Clergyman in the Established Church, living with wife Margaret Ethel (38), sons Cecil Stanley Marshall (6), Francis Meredith Marshall (4) and Wilfred Derek Marshall (2), and general domestic servants Gladys Lawrence PINNOCK (16) and Laura Agnes LUSHER (14).7 On 15 Dec 1911 there was a newspaper report: Diss Express, 15 Dec 1911 - Page 5

NEW RECTOR. - On the 4th inst. the Rev. Charles Edward Woode, B.A., was instituted to the rectory and parish church of Fersfield, on the presentation of Mr. Arthur Wansbrough Jones, solicitor, Norwich, on the nomination of Mrs. E. Woode of Fersfield. Charles listed in the in 1912. 1912 Kelly's Directory - Fersfield - "Woode Rev. Charles Edward B.A. (rector), The Rectory". In 1915 the Electoral Register showed him living at The Rectory, Fersfield - qualified as a Occupation Voter. On 25 Feb 1918. he was initiated as a freemason into the Montgomerie Lodge, Diss (lodge no. 1741). Charles appeared in the census in 1921 at The Rectory in Fersfield - 49:02, Rector of Fersfield, living with wife Margaret Ethel (48, home duties) and children Audrey Joan Marshal (9:05) and Gerald Marshall (4:09).8 In the London Gazette on 2 Aug 1927 the following notice appeared: "LAND TAX COMMISSIONERS' NAMES

FERSFIELD.

 

CLERICAL. - On Tuesday last, at the Palace, Norwich, the Rev.Charles Edward Woode, B.A. (for many years Rector of Fersfield), was collated and instituted by the Bishop of Norwich to the Rectory of Burgh Parva with the Vicarage and Parish Church of Briston annexed. The living is in the gift of the Bishop for this turn by reason of lapse. In 1931 the Electoral Register showed him living at The Rectory, Briston - qualified by residence and occupation.10 Charles listed in the in 1933. Kelly's Directory - "Woode Rev. Chas. Edwd. M.A. Vicarage, Briston, Melton Constable". Charles was recorded on the 1939 Register living at The Vicarage, Reepham Road in Walsingham, Norfolk. - Clerk in Holy Orders, b. 02.05.1872.11 Charles died on 8 Sep 1952 in Briston, Norfolk - residence The Vicarage, Briston, but died in the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital.12,13 He was buried on 11 Sep 1952 in Fersfield.14 On 12 Sep 1952 there was a newspaper report: Diss Express, 12 Sep 1952 - Page 4

 

THE REV. C. E. WOODE

(BRISTON WITH BURGH PARVA)

 

The death occurred on Monday at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital of the Rev. Charles Edward Woode. Mr. Woode, who was Vicar of Briston with Burgh Parva, had spent some years at Fersfield, moving there in 1908. He was educated at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and took an honours degree in Classics. He was ordained deacon at St. Albans in 1901 and was made a priest the following year. He held curacies at Colchester and Harrow-on-the-Hill, before he came to Fersfield he was curate of Attleborough. He has been Vicar of Briston since 1928.

Mr. Woode had been fond of cricket and lawn tennis. He leaves three sons and a daughter. He survived his wife by seven months.

The funeral service, held at Fersfield Parish Church on Thursday, was conducted by the Rector, the Rev. T. E. Hopkins. The Bishop of Thetford (the Rev. P. Woodhouse) took the commital. Mr. G. P. Parnell, the organist of Briston (who also represented Briston Primary School scholars and staff), was the organist for the hymn "Nearer my God to Thee" and the 23rd Psalm.

The family mourners were: Mr. and Mrs. Meredith Woode, son and daughter-in-law; Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Brereton, daughter and son-in-law; Mr. John Woode and Mr. Gerald Woode, grandsons.

The Rev. Derek Woode and Mr. G. I. Woode (sons) and Mrs. B. Woode (sisters-in-law) were unable to be present.

Others present included: Mrs. L. Mears, Mr. R. L. Brooks, Mr. P. Brooks, Mrs G. B. Parnell, Mr. A. Coleman, Rev. A Karling (Rector of Thurling), Mr. and Mrs. I. Bartrum, Miss D. Bartrum, Mr. B. L. Palmer (Church warden of Briston Church, also representing Briston Parochial Church Council and Primary School managers), Mrs. S. T. Marshall, Mr. C. Spurling, Mr. R. S. Copeman, Mr. D. Bowing, Mrs. B. Burroughes, Mrs. T. H. Hopkins, Mr. and Mrs F. Ramsey, Miss M. R. Page, Mr. A. Inkpen, Mr. H. R. Hayward (Burgh Parva Church warden), Mrs. C. Cooper (the honorary secretary, Briston Parochial Church Council and the Briston's Women's Institute), Mrs. E. H. Gill, Mr. E. G. Duffield (Church warden).

There were many beautiful floral tributes from friends and members of the family and from the Church and parishioners of All Saints', Briston, the managers, staff and scholars of Briston Primary School, and the Parochial Church Council and parishioners of Burgh Parva. Margaret Ethel MARSHALL, daughter of Francis (Frank) MARSHALL (1833-c. 1913) and Eleanor CORNER (c. 1839-c. 1908), was born on 28 Aug 1872 in Hartest, Suffolk. She was baptised on 26 Oct 1872 in Hartest.15 She appeared in the census in 1891 at Green South Side in Barrow - 18, living with parents Francis (57, general medical practioner) and Eleanor (50), siblings George L W (21), Mary Cecil (19) and Gilberta G E (17), and domestic servants Harriet REEVE (22, cook) and Alice M M HAYHOE (20, housemaid).16 She appeared in the census in 1901 at Barrow Green in Barrow - 28, living with parents Francis (67, surgeon) and Eleanor (60), siblings Gilberta G E (27), Herbert C (25, no occupation) and Walter C (24), and visitor Charles E WOODE (28, undergraduate); she went on to become Charles' wife.5 She appeared in the census in 1911 at The Rectory in Fersfield - 38, living with husband Charles Edward (38, Clergyman in the Established Church), sons Cecil Stanley Marshall (6), Francis Meredith Marshall (4) and Wilfred Derek Marshall (2), and general domestic servants Gladys Lawrence PINNOCK (16) and Laura Agnes LUSHER (14).7 She appeared in the census in 1921 at The Rectory, Fersfield in Fersfield - 48:10, home duties, living with husband Rev. Charles Edward (49:02, Rector of Fersfield) and children Audrey Joan Marshal (9:05) and Gerald Marshall (4:09).8 She was recorded on the 1939 Register living at The Vicarage, Reepham Road in Walsingham. - unpaid domestic duties, b. 28.08.1872.11 Margaret died on 21 Feb 1952 in Briston.17 She was buried on 25 Feb 1952 in Fersfield.18 She had her estate probated on 23 May 1952 in Norwich - WOODE Margaret Ethel of Briston Vicarage Melton Constable Norfolk (wife of the reverend Charles Edward Woode) died 21 February 1952 Probate Norwich 23 May [1952] to the said the reverend Charles Edward Woode clerk and Francis Meredith Marshall Woode hotel proprietor. Cecil Stanley Marshall WOODE (c. 1904-1925). Cecil was born c. 1904 in Harrow-on-the-Hill, Middlesex.19 He was baptised on 9 Oct 1904 in Greenhill, Harrow, London. - father given as Curate of Greenhill. Cecil appeared in the census in 1911 at The Rectory in Fersfield - 6, living with parents Charles Edward (38, Clergyman in the Established Church) and Margaret Ethel (38), brothers Francis Meredith Marshall (4) and Wilfred Derek Marshall (2), and general domestic servants Gladys Lawrence PINNOCK (16) and Laura Agnes LUSHER (14).7 He appeared in the census in 1921 at The Grammar School, The Close in Norwich - 16:10, a boarder and full time scholar at the school.20 He died on 27 Feb 1925 in Bircham Newton, Norfolk.21 On 27 Feb 1925. an Avro 504K of 99 (bombing) Squadron RAF, registration H3083, crashed on approach to RAF Bircham Newton. The crew was completing a local training mission and on the landing approach, the aircraft entered a dive and crashed. There were two crew members on board; Pilot Officer Cecil Stanley Marshall Woode (pilot, aged 20) was killed, AC1 Ernest Forrester (Service Number 253189) was seriously injured. The aircraft was damaged beyond repair, Cecil was buried on 4 Mar 1925 in Fersfield. - his residence given as Bircham Newton Aerodrome. Cecil. is mentioned in the R.A.F. No. 99 Squadron Operations Record Book "BIRCHAM NEWTON; 27.2.25; Pilot Officer C.S.M. Woode (an ex CRANWELL Cadet) was killed in an Avro 504K (This is the only fatal accident in No. 99 (B) Squadron) (to date)".

 

 

Francis Meredith Marshall WOODE (1906-c. 1967). Francis was born on 17 May 1906 in Attleborough, Norfolk.22 He was baptised on 21 Jul 1906 in Attleborough.23 He appeared in the census in 1911 at The Rectory in Fersfield - 4, living with parents Charles Edward (38, Clergyman in the Established Church) and Margaret Ethel (38), sons Cecil Stanley Marshall (6) and Wilfred Derek Marshall (2), and general domestic servants Gladys Lawrence PINNOCK (16) and Laura Agnes LUSHER (14).7 He appeared in the census in 1921 at The Grammar School, The Close in Norwich - 15:01, a boarder and full time scholar at the school.20 He married Evelyn Grace NOTTIDGE c. 1930 in South Lopham, Norfolk. They had marriage banns published on 27 Jul 1930 in South Lopham. - other dates were 03.08.1930 and 10.08.1930.24 Francis was attested in 1938. - Royal Artillery, record no. 1488948, but noted that he was then commissioned in the Royal Navy. Francis was recorded on the 1939 Register living at The Vicarage, Reepham Road in Walsingham. - School Master (temporary Principal of a Private School), b. 17.05.1906, at one time a Royal Naval Reserve, on emergency list of the Admiralty.11 In 1952 Francis was a Hotel proprietor.12 He died c. 1967 in Sheringham.25 He is commorated in Sheringham Cemetery - "IN / LOVING MEMORY OF / FRANCIS MEREDITH MARSHALL / WOODE / DIED 10TH JUNE 1967 / AGED 61 YEARS / AND REMEMBRANCE OF HIS WIFE / EVELYN / 1907 - 2000 / DEARLY BELOVED MOTHER OF JOHN AND GERALD".

 

 

Wilfred Derek Marshall WOODE (1908-c. 1975). Wilfred was born on 8 Jul 1908 in Fersfield.26,27 He was baptised on 20 Sep 1908 in Fersfield.26 He appeared in the census in 1911 at The Rectory in Fersfield - 2, living with parents Charles Edward (38, Clergyman in the Established Church) and Margaret Ethel (38), brothers Cecil Stanley Marshall (6) and Francis Meredith Marshall, and general domestic servants Gladys Lawrence PINNOCK (16) and Laura Agnes LUSHER (14).7 He married Margaret Emmeline (Peggy) BRADSHAW on 14 Jun 1937.28 He was recorded on the 1939 Register living at Norfolk House, Norwich Road in Dereham, Norfolk. - Clerk in Holy Orders, b. 08.07.1908.29 Wilfred died of a stroke c. 1975 in Fakenham, Norfolk.30 He was buried on 15 Nov 1975 in Sculthorpe, Norfolk, the ceremony was conducted by Aubrey Aitken, Bishop of Lynn. - home address given as 3 Sculthorpe Road, Fakenham.31

 

 

Audrey Joan Marshall WOODE (1912-1995). Audrey was born on 18 Jan 1912 in Fersfield.32,33 She was baptised on 17 Mar 1912 in Fersfield.34 She appeared in the census in 1921 at The Rectory in Fersfield - 9:05, living with parents Rev. Charles Edward (49:02, Rector of Fersfield) and Margaret Ethel (48:10, home duties), and brother Gerald Marshall (4:09).8 She married John Jerningham BRERETON c. 1937 - reg: Erpingham Norfolk.35 She was recorded on the 1939 Register living at Brampton Hall in Brampton, Norfolk. - unpaid domestic duties, b. 18.01.1912, husband a farmer.32 Audrey died on 7 Dec 1995 in Cawston, Norfolk - reg: M12 Norwich Norfolk.36

 

 

Gerald Ives Marshall WOODE (1916-c. 2005). Gerald was born on 20 Sep 1916 in Fersfield.37,38 He was baptised on 26 Nov 1916 in Fersfield. - parents were Charles Edward and Margaret Ethel.37 Gerald appeared in the census in 1921 at The Rectory, Fersfield in Fersfield - 4:09, living with parents Rev. Charles Edward (49:02, Rector of Fersfield) and Margaret Ethel (48:10, home duties), and sister Audrey Joan Marshal (9:05).8 On 4 Sep 1938 he. gained his Royal Aero Club Aviators’ Certificate:
