Lilian Dorothy WIGBY (1909-2002)

Lilian Dorothy WIGBY, daughter of Arthur Donald WIGBY (1887-c. 1970) and Lilian Frances LING (1883-1976), was born on 17 Aug 1909.^1,2 She was baptised on 17 Aug 1909 in Attleborough, Norfolk.³ She appeared in the census in 1911 at Workhouse Common in Attleborough - 1, living with parents Arthur (24, farmer) and Lilian (27), and brother Charlie (4).⁴ She appeared in the census in 1911 at Workhouse Common, Attleborough, Norfolk in Attleborough - 1, living with parents Arthur (24, farmer) and Lilian (27), and brother Charlie (4).⁵ She was recorded on the 1939 Register living at The Manor House in Thrandeston, Suffolk. - unpaid domestic duties; b. 17.08.1909.² Lilian married James William HOPGOOD c. 1940.⁶ She died on 26 Jul 2002 - Civil Registration give date of birth as 17.08.1909.⁷ She had her estate probated on 10 Jan 2003 in Ipswich, Suffolk - "Grant and will".⁸

All sources found so far give date of birth as 18.08.1909, strange baptised same day unless she was a sickly infant.

James William HOPGOOD, son of Charles Walter HOPGOOD (1878-1954) and Ellen Elizabeth SIMPSON (1878-1959), was born on 18 Aug 1906 in Diss, Norfolk.^9,10 He was baptised on 11 Oct 1906 in Diss. - b. 18.08.1906.¹¹ James appeared in the census in 1911 at Victoria Road, Diss in Diss - 4, living with parents Charles Walter (32, tailor and outfitter dealer) and Ellen Elizabeth Ellen (33), siblings Thomas Charles (3) and Constance Ellen (1), and general domestic servant Rose Anna HAWES (16).¹² He appeared in the census in 1921 in Depwade, Norfolk - James William, Charles Walter, Ellen Elizabeth and 2 others are all on this record. He was recorded on the 1939 Register living at 15 Market Place in Diss. - A.R.P. instructor L.A.G.C. and Equipment Officer Norfolk County Council, b. 18.08.1906.⁹ In Feb 1946. he took over the family business upon his father's retirement. James died c. 1976 - reg. Hartismere Suffolk, b. 18.08.1906.¹³ He and Lilian Dorothy WIGBY had the following children:

Richard J HOPGOOD (c. 1946- ). Richard was born c. 1946 in Diss.¹⁴ He married Josephine K J CROWE c. 1974.¹⁵
